Know Your Rights: Safety & The World Cup
In August 2025, The Department of Homeland security held a three day human trafficking training workshop with law enforcement and hospitality workers in preparation for the Super Bowl. The signs in every airport bathroom or hotel lobby multiply prior to every major sporting event. The belief that sporting events are hubs of human trafficking has been debunked by academics and oftentimes harm trafficking victims. As the World Cup approaches, hosted across Canada, Mexico, and 11 major cities in the United States, it’s important to be aware of potential stings and your rights.
The New York Post reported that New York based escorts were receiving an increase in bookings. It’s important to remember that these organizations are not your friends, and while the temporary bump in engagement may benefit you financially, it puts you and other sex workers at risk. Although your phone is protected under your Fifth Amendment rights, police frequently disregard this and have forced individuals to unlock their phones.
Tip #1: Be aware of your digital footprint. Use a VPN, proton, or alternative browser (Duck Duck Go). Consider using a separate phone for business purposes.
